CHAMBER COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP
Now in its 15th year, the Chamber Community Scholarship Program continues to be one of the premier scholarship programs in Effingham County. Because the scholarship recipients must be affiliated with a Chamber member business, the program is one of the most beneficial programs exclusively offered for our members, their employees, and families. A total of 73 scholarships have been awarded totaling nearly $110,000.
Scholarships are awarded to both high school seniors and adults who are continuing their education. Each $1,500 scholarship is to be used to finance tuition, books, and fees for the recipients. The number of scholarships awarded is based on the amount of sponsorships we receive.
The qualifying criteria and requirements are listed on the scholarship applications. Both high school student and adult applications are included. Applications can also be downloaded from the Chamber’s website. We strongly encourage members to make copies of the applications and inform their employees about this opportunity by posting the enclosed flyer.
The Chamber Community Scholarship Program would not be possible without the support of our Chamber members who contribute through the Scholarship Sponsor Program. Contributors are still being accepted. If your company wishes to donate to the Scholarship Program, please contact the Chamber office at 217/342.4147.
Scholarship recipients and sponsors will be recognized at the June 4th First Friday Luncheon. The deadline for the return of the application is Wednesday, March 31, 2010.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
EFFINGHAM BUSINESS REPORT!
The Winter 2010 issue of the Effingham Business Report is in production and will reach your mailboxes soon. This issue marks the 20th anniversary of this quarterly newsletter that shares the story of our area’s economic growth and positive quality of life with local residents and a nation-wide audience.
The Effingham Business Report was launched in the winter of 1990 at a time when we were faced with the possible shutdown of a major industry and many of our young people were leaving the area for larger cities. Today, we continue to face the challenges of an economic downturn and its impact on our county and our citizens, but we also see that existing businesses are growing, new businesses are opening and our young people are finding new opportunities to make Effingham County their home.
A key part of the long term success of this project has been our partnership with the Effingham City Council, Effingham County Board and local businesses which allows us to offer the Business Report at no cost to the subscriber. Copies of the publication are distributed in 37 states, through racks at various area business and government offices and mailed locally to city water department customers. It is also available online through the Chamber’s website.
We always receive notes and emails from local residents and readers from around the country telling us that they were not aware that there were so many good things happening in Effingham County. That’s why the Effingham Business Report was created 20 years ago and why it remains an important vehicle for sharing information about Effingham County’s growing stature among central Illinois communities today.
As we begin our 20th year of production, we continue to seek out stories from throughout Effingham County that showcase our economic growth. New subscribers can be enrolled simply by contacting the Chamber office. Business sponsors can provide financial support for the newsletter and receive a feature story on the back cover.
The Chamber is proud of our long history of support for Effingham County’s economic growth and development. We will continue to spread the good news about Effingham County for many years to come through the pages of the Effingham Business Report.

CHOICES - FACILITATORS AND SPONSORS NEEDED!
Sponsorships are still needed to fund this important project. At a cost of $5 per student, 15 sponsors are needed to offer this program to more than 450 Effingham County 8th grade students. Like other organizations in this economy, the Chamber was unable to secure the two grants that normally help fund this program. Currently seven businesses have donated to the CHOICES program so we are almost half way there. The classes begin in March and will run through April so any support would be greatly appreciated.
A few more facilitators are still needed. This is a great opportunity for you to support the educational efforts in Effingham County and the interaction with the kids is very rewarding, according to the veteran facilitators. The kids learn great life lessons in a fun and interactive atmosphere.
For more information about being a CHOICES sponsor or to volunteer to be an instructor, call Tracy at the Chamber office at 217/342.4147.

RETAIL ENERGY-EFFICIENT APPLIANCE PROGRAM
Retailers across the State of Illinois will have an opportunity to take advantage of over $12 million in federally funded rebates on energy efficient appliances through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The instant rebate program could boost retail sales, build sales tax revenue, and even spark job growth.
Customers will also be eligible for an additional $50 to $100 mail-in rebate from the state if they show proof their old appliance was recycled. From April 16-25, consumers can receive 15% rebates on Energy Star qualified washers, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, and room air conditioners.
The Illinois Retail Merchant Association is responsible for enrolling appliance retailers in this program and encourages participation.
Let’s maximize the local impact from these federal dollars! Enroll today at www.helpgreenillinois.org or by calling 312/726.4600.
